SMALL STRUCTURE (CULVERT) REPLACEMENT
INDOT FORT WAYNE DISTRICT, INDIANA


The Indiana Department of Transportation Fort Wayne District commissioned VS ENGINEERING, INC. to
provide design services for the removal and replacement of eight (8) existing small structures (culverts) throughout its jurisdictional area. Each existing structure was to be removed and replaced with a precast reinforced concrete CON SPAN structure. The replacement structures ranged in size from 14' x 8' to 28' x 11', each complete with precast headwalls and wingwalls and necessary roadway and channel improvements.

These structures are located at:



• S.R. 1 over Mason Ditch; Dekalb County
• S.R. 116 over Breiner Ditch; Adams County
• S.R. 5 over Loon Creek; Huntington County
• S.R. 218 over Salamonie River; Huntington County
• S.R. 5 over Smith Ditch; Whitley County
• U.S. 6 over Kieffer Ditch; Elkhart County
• S.R. 116 over Markley Ditch; Wells County
• U.S. 6 over Blue Ditch; Elkhart County

As a Prime Consultant, VS ENGINEERING, INC.’S responsibilities included:

 

• Project coordination and management
• Field survey and investigation
• Hydraulic analysis of natural channels and floodplains and existing and proposed structures using
   HY-8 computer model and review of backwater effects
• Analysis of various design alternatives and structure types
• Coordination with IDNR for approval of the proposed culverts and the necessary permits
• Design of small structures, railings, wingwalls and other related improvements
• Preparation of contract plans, R/W plans, special provisions, and quantity and cost estimates.
